DEMEC joins City of Seaford in Groundbreaking for $9M Reliability Project

Date: June 29, 2017

DEMEC is proud to partner with the City of Seaford on a $9 million project to improve the reliability of the city’s electric distribution system. The improvements are referred to as the Pine Street Expansion and Reconstruction Project. The project consists of combining and upgrading the Central and Pine Street Substations and upgrading several main distribution lines.  Installing industry-leading equipment and new controls is an efficiency improvement that is designed to increase the reliability of Seaford’s electric system and benefit the city and all of Seaford’s customers.

“This project has been in the planning stage for a couple years. It is rewarding to see that planning coming to fruition as we move forward with constructing the improvements that will benefit the community for decades to come,” said DEMEC President and CEO, Patrick E. McCullar.

As a public power utility, the City of Seaford had to receive approval from their local governing body through an open, public vetting process. At their August 9, 2016 meeting, the City Council approved the project, and it is on track to be in-service by June 2018.

This project demonstrates the City of Seaford’s continued stance on the importance of being proactive in the regular maintenance and upkeep of their distribution system to provide reliable electric service to their community.  Most recently the American Public Power Association (APPA) awarded the city with a Gold Level Reliable Public Power Provider (RP3) designation. This makes Seaford part of an elite group of 110 public power utilities nationwide to receive such a recognition. Reliability, safety, development, and system improvements are all reviewed before receiving this award.
