DEMEC Energy Education Tools

DEMEC and its nine municipal members are pleased to offer  a new set of online tools and resources to help you better understand and manage your home energy use and costs. You may be familiar with the original Energy Depot® for Homes  tool as your one-stop resource for energy information but now we have two new resources that move beyond the original tool.

EPA's Home Energy Yardstick provides a simple assessment of your home's annual energy use compared to similar homes. By answering a few basic questions about your home, you can get:

  • Your home's Home Energy Yardstick score (on a scale of 0 to 10);

  • Insights into how much of your home's energy use is related to heating and cooling versus other everyday uses like appliances, lighting, and hot water;

  • Links to guidance from ENERGY STAR on how to increase your home's score, improve comfort, and lower utility bills; and

  • An estimate of your home's annual carbon emissions.

Home Energy Saver

The Home Energy Saver™ (HES) empowers homeowners and renters to save money, live better, and help the earth by reducing energy use in their homes. HES recommends energy-saving upgrades that are appropriate to the home and make sense for the home's climate and local energy prices. The money invested in these upgrades commonly earns "interest" in the form of energy bill savings, at an annual rate of 20% or more (see examples). HES also estimates the home's carbon footprint and shows how much it can be reduced. For professional users, we also offer HESpro and teachers and students can check out Energized Learning.

DEMEC will continue to offer the Energy Depot® for Homes link for a limited time so users can download any saved information.  Energy Depot for homes will discontinue after January 31, 2018.
